How RhoGAM® Brand Protects Against HDN
RhoGAM® Ultra-Filtered PLUS is a sterile solution that contains antibodies to the Rh factor. The antibodies in RhoGAM® Brand are derived from human plasma that has been carefully screened and processed for purity. When injected, the RhoGAM® Brand antibodies circulate in the Rh-negative mother’s bloodstream and prevent her immune system from making the sensitized antibodies that would threaten a baby with Rh-positive blood.
WHEN YOU NEED TO RECEIVE RhoGAM® BRAND
Because you are most likely to be exposed to your baby’s blood during the last three months of pregnancy and at delivery, your doctor will likely prescribe at least one dose of RhoGAM® Ultra-Filtered PLUS at around 28 weeks of pregnancy. You will then be given a second dose for added protection within 72 hours of delivery—if your baby is found to be Rh-positive. As an Rh-negative woman, you will need to receive RhoGAM® Brand during each pregnancy to prevent sensitization of your blood.
Other times when you would need to receive RhoGAM® Brand
You may also receive RhoGAM® Brand at other times during pregnancy when it's likely you'll come into contact with your unborn baby's blood, such as during amniocentesis and/or after any injury to the abdomen, and then every 12 weeks thereafter to keep RhoGAM® Brand antibodies at a protective level in your blood. It’s very important that Rh-negative women receive RhoGAM® Brand or MICRhoGAM® Brand following a miscarriage or terminated pregnancy. MICRhoGAM® Brand is for 1st trimester pregnancy losses, and RhoGAM® Brand is for 2nd and 3rd trimester pregnancy losses. The Rh factor is present on fetal red blood cells as soon as eight weeks of gestation. So even if a pregnancy ended in the first trimester, the immune system will still have had time to begin making antibodies to Rh-positive cells, putting all subsequent pregnancies at risk. Without treatment of an Rh immune globulin product such as RhoGAM® Brand following any terminated pregnancy, even a first full-term pregnancy, can dangerously affect subsequent pregnancies.
